For Roy Monteiro, Portugal - An Adventure of Discovery was an exhilarating journey to rediscover his own heritage and to showcase Portugal’s unique scenic and cultural grandeur to a global audience. Faced with countless hurdles and seemingly insurmountable odds, Roy’s commitment and perseverance to bring his creative vision to life reflects the true pioneering spirit of many Portuguese before him. The production of the films and companion book was also motivated by his wish to unite the millions of Portuguese and their descendants throughout the world in an international community based upon a shared heritage, and to inspire the people of Portugal to rediscover their magnificent country from a whole new perspective.

Marc Pingry

Marc Pingry began his broadcasting career in the mid-seventies as a camera operator in Milwaukee and joined KCTS (PBS) Seattle in 1979. Since that time Mark has been an innovator in HDTV aerial cinematography and was recognized for his talents with 17 regional Emmy Awards. His most recent HDTV accomplishments include Chihuly Over Venice and Over Alaska.

Fernando de Simas

A producer with our co-production partner, RTP, Fernando has over 30 years of experience in all aspects of television and film production. He is a pioneer of HDTV productions in Portugal, including a documentary about acclaimed Fado singer Am?lia Rodrigues.

Jeff Gentes

Jeff has over 25 years experience in public television as a producer, director, writer and editor. During the last 10 years he was involved in numerous HDTV productions, including the highly acclaimed Over America series for which he is recognized as an industry leader.

Alice Ikeda

Alice is a producer at Intris HD, where she has gained extensive experience dealing with the challenges of HDTV at all stages and levels of production. In addition, Alice has also been involved with numerous High Definition productions for NHK Japan.


Jorge Quintela

Jorge began playing piano at the age of 3 and initiated his recording career by the age of 17. He has worked with many of Portugal's top performers including Carlos Guilherme and Dulce Pontes and his song Lusitana Paix?o won first prize at the Portuguese National song festival. Jorge currently composes and produces film, television and advertising soundtracks.

Greg Day

Greg has edited numerous TV series and HDTV documentaries including the acclaimed Bill Nye - The Science Guy, Chihuly Over Venice, and Vaudeville: An American Masters Special.

Robert Brunelle

Accomplished in all areas of HDTV engineering, our digital colourist has over 10 years of experience in HD Engineering, and is the recipient of several international awards for his outstanding work, including an Emmy for his work on Over Canada.

Ruy de Carvalho

Ruy de Carvalho is Portugal's most recognized and beloved theatre, film and television actor with a distinguished career spanning over 50 years.

Mário Machado

Born in Shanghai, to Portuguese and Chinese parents, multiple Emmy Award-winner M?rio Machado has been a professional broadcaster/producer since 1967. Since then M?rio has been involved in virtually all aspects of on-air broadcasting including anchor, narrator and actor.

Russ Heinl

Combining his artistic talent with a love for aviation, Russ Heinl has earned an international reputation as a specialist in aerial photography. Working almost exclusively from helicopters, Heinl has photographed images for a number of books and publications around the world, including the critically acclaimed Over Canada, and is the official photographer of the Canadian Armed Forces' Snowbirds aerobatics team.


Mário Soares

Former Prime Minister and President of Portugal, Mário Soares is considered the elder statesman in the country and Portugal's Father of Democracy.

António Alçada Baptista


Born in the mountains in Covilh? on January 29, 1927, Mr. Baptista has always been involved and active in European cultural movements and journalism and is the author of various works, such as Os N?s e os La?os, Catarina ou o Sabor da Ma?? and O Riso de Deus. He holds several posts of cultural relevance and continues to write regularly for several publications.

António Manuel Couto Viana

Rivers Of Green

Born in Viana do Castelo in 1923, Mr. Viana is a poet, dramatist, essayist, memoir writer, gastronome and author of children's books. His highly praised writing has been published in 30 volumes of poetry and more than 60 other volumes, many of which have been translated into English, French, Spanish and Chinese.

Fernanda Botelho

Memories Of Old Porto

Born in Porto in 1926, Ms. Botelho first appeared on the literary scene in 1950 with a book of poetry. From that moment she has accumulated literary awards as a fiction writer, as well as writing chronicles and literary reviews.

Manuel Alegre

Syllables Of The Soul

Born in ?gueda in 1936, Mr. Alegre is the most melodic of Portuguese poets. He began writing early in life and started a newspaper while still attending secondary school. He has held several Government posts, and is currently a Member of Parliament. Among other works, he has published, Pra?a da Can??o, O Canto e as Armas, Coimbra Nunca Vista and Senhora das Tempestades.

Hélia Correia

A Fairy Tale

Born in Lisbon in 1949, Ms. Correia spent her childhood and adolescence in the rural setting of Mafra. First published in 1968, her writing included poems, and small texts of prose in anthologies and literary pages. Her first novel Separar das ?guas appeared in 1981. A Fenda Er?tica, Perdi??o and Ins?nia are some of her other works.


Urbano Tavares Rodrigues

Lisbon Distant Horizons

Born in 1923, Mr. Rodrigues lived his first 10 years on a "monte" in the Alentejo near Moura, an influence that pervades all of his novels and stories. Translated into numerous languages, he has received several literary awards, and among his most well known books are Bastardos do Sol, As Aves da Madrugada, Contos da Solid?o and Violeta e a Noite.

Lídia Jorge Algarve

Golden Tides

Born in Boliqueime in the Algarve in 1946, Ms. Jorge became a secondary school teacher and a university lecturer in Lisbon. Her books have been translated into several languages. O Dia dos Prod?gios, A Costa dos Murm?rios and A Ma?on are some examples of her work.

João de Melo

Atlantic Eden

Born on the island of S. Miguel, the Azores, in 1949, Mr. de Melo continued his studies in Lisbon in 1967. He taught literature and published several essays on the writings of authors from the Azores. His vast literary output of stories, essays and novels, includes Toda e Qualquer Escrita, O Meu Mundo N?o ? Deste Reino and Gente Feliz com Ligrimas.

Isabel Aguiar Barcelos

Enchanting Garden

Born in 1958 in Funchal, Capital of Madeira, Ms. Barcelos graduated in modern languages and literature at the University of Classics in Lisbon. Her books Sand?lias do Tempo, Revela??es, Anjos de Asas Verdes and Viagens no Pa?s dos Sonhos have all been published since she made her literary debut in 1991 with a book of poetry.
